Much loved and missed, St augustine’s Swimming Pool was designed by David Percival and built by Gill in 1961. It lasted 35 years before succumbing to the ravages of water and chlorine on the steel reinforced concrete. It provided several generations of Norwich with cheap access to a admittedly often quite cold way of having a swim, bombing off the diving boards, catching verrucas and having really red eyes for 48 hours afterwards. The high board was utterly terrifying.
The photo is used by kind permission of Jonathan Plunkett, taken by his father in 1962. Two men we owe a huge amount to in terms of how we see our city change and evolve.
Also available on the High Street at Norfolk Retro, 64-66 St Augustines Street, Norwich, NR3 3AD.
