Happisburgh is a village on the very edge on the north east coast of Norfolk. It sits in a soft glacial landscape periodically battered by North Sea storms and surges which are biting huge chunks out of the sand, clay and till which underlays it. It is a rather beautiful and strange part of the county, with twisted piles and wood and the remains of old sea defences, broken Second World War pillboxes and building debris mix with the sand, shingle and fossil bones of hippopotamus, deer and elephants. and the ancient blue clay on which our cousins stood and napped tools out of the dark Norfolk flints close to a million years ago.
