Salle acquired its name from Sallow, the Norfolk dialect word for willow – It’s Old English – Sallow-ley, gradually contracting under the pressure of time and voice. This was August 2018, the air was still, just bird song and dust on the paths, I picked up flints along the field edges, turning them in my hand – staring backwards at the huge medieval church of St Peter and St Paul across the top of the rows of corn
And incidentally, Salle is pronounced Saul.
