SOLITARY FIELDWALKER
Bernafay, north to Trones Wood, Somme, France.
The fields here are rich with remnants of the past, spent bullets, shrapnel balls, fragments of shell-casing, buttons, buckles and strap-ends. In the fallow gap between cropping and planting figures are often seen walking the fields for what the plough and rains have revealed. A French lad, we raised hands to each other across the till.
