The gate. Always there, reminding you of the sheer number of men who are still lost in the Salient, either missing or buried in unmarked graves – ‘Known unto god’ – 54,896 of them here, still more on the curved walls and flat panels of memorials around the Salient from Tyne Cot to Ploegsteert.
