Description
RAF Coltishall was one of my childhood haunts, visiting the air displays in the very early 1970s has always stuck in my mind. But more so the Lightnings splintering the air over our house or glinting out over the sea on drowsy summer days. An opportunity came us to visit in August 2019 so I jumped at the chance. The fields which have echoed with the sound of Hurricanes, Typhoons, and later as we stepped the falteringly into the Cold War the Vampire, Meteor, Hunter and the Venom. It ended it’s days as a base for Jaguars, I’d long since lost interest in aeroplanes by then. In 2007 it closed operationally, the buildings becoming a prison and a business centre the drifts of fields around Scottow becoming host to a Solar Farm. The Cold War echoes on, still going hot in my mind between the concrete blast walls and test bays out on the dispersal, concrete megaliths of the future sprouting between the weeds.
