The detritus of battle still surfaces under the plough along the whole of the line. Everything from spent fuses, driving bands and bits of mortars to intact and still dangerous shells and grenades. Farmers leave them by the roadsides for the Département du Déminage to. An estimated 300 million tons of duds were fired on the Western Front during the conflict.
