Sovereign House is part of the Anglia Square complex, and was originally built for HMSO (Her Majesty’s Stationery Office). This poster Celebrates the odd brutalist behemoth located on the north-side of Norwich city centre. The remains loom over Anglia Square and Magdalen Street. It is like it or loathe it, an icon of 1960s, Her Majesty’s Stationery Office was at its peak prior to privatisation of most of our leaflets. The design by Alan Cooke Associates was a pioneering statement of hope; a bright new future for our cities.
With its oddly pleasing concrete sectional staircases and strange bronzed but now largely broken windows, it is now a largely a grave of pigeons and a Buddleia arboretum and has it’s own microclimate perfectly suited to growing moss and certain grasses on the inside. It may not be here for much longer, famous and very repetitive last words since 1996, so grab a slice of it just in case.
Also available on the High Street at Norfolk Retro, 64-66 St Augustines Street, Norwich, NR3 3AD.
